Degree
Applicants must have obtained a recognized Bachelor's Degree (BS, BSc, SB, etc.) – or a degree at the same level of an academic Bachelor's Degree, for instance its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of high standing, or 180 ECTS credits in the European system – in one of the following (or equivalent) fields:
- Applied Mathematics
- Mathematics with a good background in Physics
- Physics with a good background in Mathematics
- Engineering with a large background in Mathematics and Physics.
Students in their final year of undergraduate study may be admitted on condition that their Bachelor's degree is awarded before the enrolment on MathMods MSc. The accomplishment of the Bachelor's studies must be documented no later than 15 August 2013.
Language certificate
All applicants whose native language is not English are required to prove a satisfactory level of spoken and written English, certified by:
- TOEFL: minimum 550 for PBT / 213 for CBT / 80 for IBT. You may submit your TOEFL certificate simply as an electronic copy (.pdf) or you may send it directly through ETS. Use these data when adding us as a new score recipient: Code number: 3676, Institution: University of L'Aquila
- IELTS: 6.0 points
- CPE: Grades A, B, C
- CAE: Grades A, B
- or equivalent to the above.
The language certificate must have been obtained within the four years immediately preceding the requested semester of admission and be valid at the time of enrolment.
In this case we may also accept a temporary certificate from the Director/Coordinator of your Bachelor's Degree programme (or another faculty member) stating that the applicant is so fluent in English that s/he can understand and discuss high level scientific topics. If possible, the letter should be signed either by a native English speaker academic full Professor or by a full Professor in English language (with full contacts included). Then, if you are selected, you will have to provide an official certificate (see the list above) no later than 15 August 2013.
Who doesn't have to certify English proficiency?
- Applicants having obtained a Bachelor's Degree in an institution in which English is the language of instruction (provided that they submit documentation of it).
- Applicants having obtained their high school (secondary) diploma in an institution in which English is the language of instruction (provided that they submit documentation of it).
Checklist of mandatory documents
All applicants will have to submit the following mandatory documents through the online application form before the deadlines:
- electronic copy (.pdf) of your passport (or ID card for European applicants). No passport yet? Read here;
- electronic copy (.pdf) of your detailed curriculum vitae (only use this template. Click here for instructions and examples or you can even create in online from here, then save it as a pdf file);
- electronic copy (.pdf) of your full academic transcript with records for each single attended course and with the list of courses to be attended to get your Bachelor's Degree;
- electronic copy (.pdf) of a file containing a description of the attended courses you consider relevant for your application, especially the courses related to Mathematics and Physics. Only use this template. As this is not a document usually issued by universities, applicants have to fill in that file by themselves as self-certification;
- electronic copy (.pdf) of an English certificate (click here for more info).
- two academic reference letters, to be submitted by two different referees only via our online Reference system (the link and the instructions can be found in the application form);
- for all the above documents, in case they are not written in English, please upload an official English translation, or a translation provided and signed by the Institution awarding the Bachelor's Degree and (if possible) by a native English speaker academic full Professor or by an academic full Professor in English language (with full contacts included);
- electronic copy (.pdf) of a letter of intent describing your interest in the subjects related to the proposed fields of study. The letter can be addressed to the MathMods Evaluation Committee. There is no particular template to follow, but you must not exceed one page - extra pages will not be evaluated.
Additional documents might be submitted only if closely related to the proposed field of study.
